Bert Huyghe
“JAZZ”
January 11 - February 2, 2025
Multidisciplinary artist Bert Huyghe (b. 1989) lives and works in Ghent, where he divides his time between painting, writing, making music, and publishing zines. He paints with an apparent childlike playfulness and a hilarious capacity for self-deprecation.
'JAZZ' is the epitome of essential form. With only a few black bars on a white surface, Bert Huyghe paints the archetype of a piano. Zero and one as an archetype on a canvas. In different formats, unrealistic yet recognizable, it is the black keys that make the plane a piano without reducing it to an image. Through the repetition of concept and color (or its absence), the paint becomes matter again. The fields of white and black take all sorts of forms, in height, width and even depth. As in his series of figures and jerseys, in “JAZZ,” Bert Huyghe explores the possibilities offered by limitations. In those three series in particular, he also pokes fun at commerce, because there is not the one jersey or the one piano. The multiplicity moderates the importance of the subject and challenges us as viewers to look beyond the image. The paint is what makes each work unique. By going back to the pure minimum, suddenly much becomes possible again. Jazz, in other words.
