Bert Huyghe
Belgium, b. 1989
Multidisciplinary artist Bert Huyghe (b. 1989) lives and works in Ghent, where he divides his time between painting, writing, making music, and publishing zines. He paints with an apparent childlike playfulness and a hilarious capacity for self-deprecation. The mural in the Beurscafé is inspired by the colorful landscapes in the backgrounds of the iconic animated series The Simpsons.
Huyghe was born in Eeklo in 1989 and grew up without any highbrow artistic influences. So, when he first saw an abstract painting in a museum, his immediate reference was... football. A black-and-white striped painting by Daniel Buren? That’s a Juventus jersey. “I’ve always embraced that childlike way of looking at art, and I think my perspective hasn’t changed much.”
In his paintings, Huyghe explores what painting can mean today, both socially and personally. He does so with an apparent childlike playfulness and a frequently hilarious capacity for self-deprecation. Despite his youthful age, Bert Huyghe has been a driving force in the Ghent art scene for years, and his work has already been exhibited in Belgian museums such as SMAK and Mu.Zee.
