Anna Godzina

Moldova, b. 1990

Anna Godzina (Chisinau, Moldova, 1990) studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, where she graduated in 2019 with a master’s degree and was awarded the Hugo Roelandt Prize 2019, the Mathilde Horlait-Dapsens Foundation Prize 2019, and the STRT Schot Prize 2019. She is an internationally acclaimed artist whose work has been exhibited at the S.M.A.K. in Ghent (2017), Beursschouwburg in Brussels (2018), ERGO in Athens (2020), and the M HKA in Antwerp (2021). Her work is represented in collections such as the M HKA in Antwerp, the Flemish Community, and the Verbeke Foundation, as well as in numerous private collections.

Godzina's existential and socially engaged work stems from autobiographical elements, as well as observations she makes during walks of urban situations or the convergence of objects in time and space. Her work is animistic in nature, considering matter as an active substance. The wandering, migrating objects she incorporates into her work carry a discourse about value systems, cultural diversity, class hierarchies, and socio-political divides. In the final works she presents, the in-situ qualities of the exhibition space play a significant role, as does the fluid interplay between objects, time, space, sound, and movement.
