Mariami Tsotadze

Georgia, b. 1999

Mariami Tsotadze (b. 1999, Tbilisi, Georgia) is a visual artist/painter. She lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium. This year, she obtained her Master's degree in painting at LUCA School of Arts in Ghent. Her paintings express a feeling. She aims to enhance this sensitivity by creating contrasts between certain elements in her work. Examples of this include soft, tactile clothing and harder elements like a metal bicycle or the use of cold concrete walls.

The paintings of Fernand Léger, especially “La Lecture” (1924), are major inspirations for Tsotadze. Léger also brings contrasts into conversation, such as the softness of the woman and the cubist, hardened forms.

Not only does she aim to evoke sensitivity through these contrasts, but her portrayal of personal events often carries a humorous or surreal twist. In her work, we see notably few faces, as she seeks to convey recognizability through the rest of the body. This is especially true in the fragile hands, which convey intimacy and are intertwined like braided flowers.
