Kurt Ryslavy
Austria, b. 1961
Kurt Ryslavy The Austrian painter, conceptual artist, and poet Kurt Ryslavy is the originator of the concept of “bourgeoise travesty” as a form of artistic expression. He produces juridical non-fiction documents across various media. Through these found images/inventions, which he combines with written texts, he breaks taboos surrounding art and society.
Ryslavy prefers to work with media such as text, video, installations, performance, sculpture, painting, and exhibition concepts.
Kurt Ryslavy has presented his work at various Flemish and international art institutions: he was invited to Münster by Kasper König in 1997. He was invited by Harald Szeemann to participate in the exhibition Visionary Austria at Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels in 1998.
Other presentations include Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens (Deurle, BE, 1998), Richard Foncke Gallery (Ghent, BE, 2000), Kunsthalle Krems (AT, 2000), Neue Galerie Graz (AT, 2001), Komplot (Brussels, BE, 2007), Le Commissariat (Paris, FR, 2009), Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium / BOZAR (Brussels, 2012), Cultuurcentrum Strombeek, Emily Harvey Foundation (New York, NY), Établissement d’en Face (Brussels, 2017), Vincent van GoghHuis (Zundert, NL, 2018), Avee Gallery (Kortrijk, BE, 2022), and Museum für zeitgenössische Kunst Admont (AT, 2023).
