	“Shelf Life” with Emma Verhulst


25.09 - 25.10.2026Pizza Gallery presents ‘Shelf Life’, the second solo presentation by Emma Verhulst at their Antwerp location. ‘Shelf Life’ refers to the length of time that a commodity may be stored before it degrades, an expiration date but also refers to a domestic life, the architecture of the home.
Emma Verhulst (b. 1994) bases her work on observations, photographs and found footage. An initial drawing serves as the starting point for an intuitive, associative and cumulative process. From these drawings and collages emerges a fragmented narrative and a graphic thread that links the paintings together.Her visual language evokes a familiar yet simultaneously alienating universe. Contradictory feelings and situations – such as discomfort and comfort, isolation and connection, and the public and the private – play a significant role. The work ultimately expresses an inability: the inevitable lack of absolute grammar and perfect agreement.The exhibition opens on Friday September 25th from 7 PM onwards, and runs until October 25th 2026. Pizza Gallery is open every weekend between 2 PM and 6 PM, or by appointment.

What can an unfinished play become in a painting? For Rein Dufait (b.1990, Belgium), Woyzeck by Georg Büchner (1813–1837) is the starting point for a series of fifteen canvases. Between the written word and the painted form, a space opens in which Büchner’s work can continue to think. His protagonist lives under the pressure of forces beyond his control. In Dufait’s work, this tension can be approached through the act of making itself: each intervention changes the whole, each addition opens one possibility and closes another. ‘Woyzeck’ can be read as a question about what holds something upright—and what forces reshape it. How much can a body, a material, a structure withstand? Between intervening and letting things happen, a form emerges that could have been otherwise.
